Preliminary Task - Film Evaluation Questions

1. Who did you work with and how did you manage the task between you?
I worked with Josh Cat and Maz in this piece, Me and Maz acted mainly while Josh and Cat filmed.

2. How did you plan your short filmed piece? Did you use any other films for your inspiration?
We used about a boy as an inspirational film using a few lines from that, we planned our short film as a breaking up scene in a cafe.

3. What technology did you use to complete the task, and how did you use it?
We used a video camera to film.

4. What factors did you have to take into account when planning, shooting and editing?
make sure the scene is right for a cafe, editing must have relevant music as a backing track.

5. Which film conventions does the piece follow? e.g. music, match on action, 180 degree rule, camera work etc
It follows the 180 degree rule well.

6. Which does it break?
We used copy right music as a soundtrack instead of our own created piece on garage band.

7. How did you consider mise en scene? e.g. lighting, camera work, setting, costume, props etc
We got some props for a cafe scene like mugs tea bisquits, and layed out tables like a cafe scene, we also used a pretend waitor.

8. How did you consider narrative? Is there a sense of a storyline? Can any theorists be applied e.g. Barthes, Todorov, Propp, Levi Strauss
There is the sense of a short story line about a break up.

9. How successful was your filmed piece? Identify what worked well, and with hindsight, what would you improve/do differently?
We had a short time slot to film therefore i feel we rushed certain shots. i also believed if we filmed with the camera closer to the people the voices would be heard more clear

10. What have you learnt about producing a short piece of film? Looking ahead, how will this learning be significant when completing the rest of your foundation coursework? Knowing that using a variety of camera shots makes the piece flow a lot more slow. also the 180 degree would be key if were following a conversation

Garage Band

For our 2nd piece we were not alloud to use a copyright theme tune therefore we used a programme (Garage Band) to create our own piece. It has a variety of instrument solo's from guitars to piano's to electronic sounds.
I worked with Josh Cat and Maz on garage band. Unfortunately we could not find any decent sounds for our piece. Using garage band will help in the future so we can easily create music.

Magazine Covers

We paired up to create a magazine cover and contents. Using a picture of somebody around the school taken from a mid-shot angle. We have to take 3 Colours, 3 Fonts and not too much writing into accountantcy while creating the cover for a magazine thats called 'Lutto's Latest'. I worked with Josh on this practical as we are similar and like the same things and colours.
After designing our cover and contents we went out to take a picture for the front cover. We went out to take a picture but were unsuccessful as we could not find anyone fit to have the picture of them taken.

2nd practical

We and Josh decided to pair up with Cat and Maz to see if we could work with both genders. Together we worked well to produce a piece where Maz dumped Wez in a cafe scene.
The scene was suppose to be in the coffee shop but it was closed so we had to improvise and filmed it in one of the D.T rooms.

We used a variety of shots sticking to the 180 degree rule.
In the edits we mainly used fade in/outs we also tried to create a backing track but it didn't work well.
Overall i think it was a good team effort and i thought it was a change from having an all boy group. The film went smoothly but the edits was quite difficult.
