Pitch feedback

pitch feedback - as an overall everybody likes my idea. They said its good to get away from the usual topic of stalking. Around 70% of the people said it would look good if executed well, the only problem is actually executing it. As a whole the interesting/unique idea was catching attention from the class so we decided to take it on as a task. We need to use camera shots of all angles and show hierachy with the more important to the less important characters. Listening to my pitch my group all concluded the TMG was aimed at males but wasn't completely righting off women.

Potential problems -> Make sure the setting is realistic, like an alley way etc.
-> Props make sure the opening looks authentic.

Ident 3

This ident is a light grey which is abit to light for the genre. although its grey its abit too light.

This concludes that the first ident I annotated is best suited.

Ident 2

This ident is very colourful which could represent our film usings attraction, but the colours are way to bright to suit the action/thriller genre therefore people could think our film is childish so I don't think this ident could be taken further.

Ident 1

This ident suits my film genre. with action colours need to be dark/danger like which brings in your reds and greys and blacks. this ident being grey suits the action genre, but the problem is having a dark ident makes it dull which could discourage people to watch it as it could represent the film.

First draft feedback from Teacher

My teacher said our draft needed a few improvements, these are such things as lighting, titles, music, and our actors.

One of the problems with our draft was the lighting. It got darker towards the end of the film although this film opening would have only happened over a short time in the film. to learn from these mistake we need to film earlier on and allow ourself some more time.

Also we were told our titles were boring so we need to experiment with different fonts, and hopefully find one which suits our film genre. With feedback like this we now have found a font which is decent for the film.

In our draft we didnt include any music so in our film you could hear the background noise of cars, people walking by, etc. To solve this problem we looked at copyright free music and used a programme called garage band. hopefully using these we can find perfect music for our opening.

the last problem was the actors, we used 16 year olds, and why not because it was easy to arrange and no hastle of organising free times with adults, also we understood each other alot easier. Realism got back to us when you wouldnt have 16 year olds handling important files. So our teacher advised us to try and get older actors to add realism to our film.
Using this advice we asked Will's dad if he would feature in our film along with some other adults.

iPod

For my iPod on my blog i've chosen rock songs as rock suits my genre of film. On the xXx opening they used a rock intro, and that film inspired ours therefore i've chosen to use it for my blog which relates to our main opening.
Synopsis

Our film is about a company with an important file that needs transporting. A few phone calls are made to organise the transportation, little do they know a gang member listens in to the conversation. When the file is being transported by hand the gang member that was listening in to the phone call intercepts the file by assualting the transporter, there is a brief fight but the gang member is too much of an experience fighter and easily wins. he takes the file and gets a way in a car, when the beaten transporter comes around he calls his boss to let him know, his boss vows to get the gang back.

Draft Feedback from Friends

Draft Feedback ->
Neil Powis; Needs more shots and longer so more storyline, he says the camera work is good, Also we need to know what the gangster is after before he takes it e.g. have a scene where he's being told to intercept. Editing was ok but can hear directors voices and actors talking/laughing in back ground.

Jamie Webster -> Needs to be longer with some experimenting shots e.g. high shots look down. Editing needs to be more interesting using effects like black and white for when needed, also the titles need to suit the actual film and they aren't action like.

Jack Kemp -> Around 1 mintue is not long enough for an opening so you will have to think of some way to extend it, also we need sound for when the chase occurs like an upbeat tune to create a rushed atmosphere. Overall it flows well it just needs a little more depth.

Ben Summerton -> Needs more length, and the ending needs to finish properly e.g. A get-away, also the fall on the fence looks fake so it needs to seek realism, the chase needs a beat aswell. The Editing was good except there was a little talking in shots in the background.

1. Does the title ‘Interception’ grab your attention and suit the film opening?

2. What music would suit the opening?

3. Is an action/thriller your cup of tea?

4. How many actors do you think is necessary?

5. Do you think the use of adults would be necessary to create realism?

6. Do you like chases (Foot & Vehicle) in films?

7. Do you think the use of weapons would enhance the action experience?

8. Do you think the use of mise-en-scene would help determine the gangster (e.g. Fags, Tracksuits etc)?

9. Do you think the identity of the gangster and gang lord should not be revealed to create an enigma code?

10. Do you think more adventurous camera angles would make it a lot better?
Title,

We have chosen to name our film opening 'Interception'. We have chosen this because in our opening there is an interception. Also I feel the title suits the genre of our film (Action/Thriller).
PITCH

We have chosen to do film based around a thriller genre. In my opening the CIA have an important file that needs transporting but half way through transporting the man carrying the file is ambushed by a Gang member down an alleyway and the file falls in to the wrong pair of hands. Bloody and battered the assaulted man tells the CIA boss and the boss vows to get the gang back.

We watched 'The Soloist Featurette' a featurette is when is the film crew talk about thing's like certain shot's, clips/scenes, and area's.

From the featurette i've learnt
>The film is based on a true story from an article published on the LA times by a man called Scott Lopez. The article was about a homeless guy that played an instrument. The journalist took this man in..... tbc

These are a few potential actors for the film, obviously we will use a couple of them as some suit a certain part, if we gather alot of actors it helps us find the perfect one therefore taking pictures of them is suitable.

Questions About Filming

1. The action: identify the event your idea is based around; what actually happens (discovery of a body, an illicit meeting, a witness seeing a crime being committed, a criminal act taking place, a telephone call, a chase, a short journey etc)?
A criminal Act will take place when a gang assault a man and steal an important file from the CIA.

2. The theme(s): what should it make the audience think about or feel, what ‘issues’ will it raise (revenge, sexuality, voyeurism, stalking, obsession, greed etc)?
The theme of the film will be revenge when the CIA get the gang back throughout.

3. The narrative: how is it structured - classic narrative pattern or break with convention, real time or different time zones, flashbacks/forwards, dreams etc. Will there be dialogue? What about diegetic/ non-diegetic sound?
In our opening I believe we will use diagetic and non-diagetic sound in the opening e.g. sound will be used to build up tension and also maybe gun shots will be used. My film will be set in the present. May involve flashback.

4. The character(s): who are they, identify their roles, what are their characteristics, including gender, appearance etc?
I am unsure about characters yet~

5. The setting and choice of location: where is it set?

Either Gilmorton, Cotesbach, Lutterworth or Broughton.

6. The mise-en-scene: identify colours, lighting, dress codes, the overall visual look.
We need an office set for the start and alley ways for the assault. These will most likely take part between day and night so the evening. The gangsters will be dressed like a typical gangster. The men working for the CIA will be dressed smartly.
7. The camera work: the style you are aiming for
Build tension, action & gripping we need to aim for this style like the opening to XXX.

8. The editing: edited as a continuous sequence, use of cross cutting, use of montage, or combination?
We are unsure of editing yet as we need to see how filming goes.

These questions are to help us determine idea's.

The image above is not a good location for a film because it is to narrow, and also it will be difficult to film on because of the lack of space around the concrete.

The positives about this picture is that it has alot of space to film different angles to get the best possible results, also this alley way has motor access for the motorbike we are planning to use. One negative of this alley way is that it is near a lot of houses so we may get complaints about the noise we are making.

The possitives about this alley is that it has the urban touch that we are trying to achieve, it also has space to achieve good camera shots. One negative is that it may be hard to ride the motorbike down this alley.

This alley way has a lot of potential because it has an urban touch, also we could do a range of different shots because of this our end product will look better. A negative of this is that it is a popular walkway so it may be hard to keep continuity because we will have to keep pausing shots.

This is Me Jack and Will's thumbnails for our practical. we have chosen a wide variety of camera shots to show hierachy and make the piece interesting. We will also use a create piece of sound non diagetically for tension.
Potential film titles;

Interception.
The Taking.
Vengeance.
The Getaway.
Firewall.
Justice Seeker.
Justice.
Virus.
Crossed Lines.
Conspiracy Files.

The Scheme.
PayBack.
Revenge.
Justice Or death.

This is a moodboard made up of several film covers from the 1990's to today. These films are all thrillers. I chose a variety of different thrillers e.g. action thrillers, psychological thrillers and political thrillers.

This opening is from James Bond 'Casino Royale'. It uses sound to build up tension like all the thriller openings i've seen. It also uses an enigma code at the start when bond chases this black guy. The mystery of this is why bond is chasing this guy and what he wants with this guy. At the end of the opening we find out he wants the guys bag, and it actually finishs bond opening his bag, this is a great way to end an opening as it encourages an audience to watch on.

This opening is an action/thriller genre and is from the film triple x. It uses an interesting kind of music (rock/heavy metal) which is fast moving which matches the opening chase. The same as the Saw 3 opening it uses dark colour and is lighten by lamps etc only. I think Music And Scene are the most important thing to get right in a thriller. At the start of these openings there is usually a mystery.
For my practical i have chosen to do a film opening with a thriller genre.. The first opening i have chosen to analyse is Saw 3.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ucqya3dUgow

I feel this film falls in to a thriller/horror genre. It starts with a mystery as to a torch on a gun lying blood-stained tile floor. Suddenly a scared panicing man appears stretching for the gun which asks many qeustions e.g. where this man is? who is he? The scene is also set dark to also add to the sense of mystery. I feel if we create a thriller opening we will need create a dark opening scene and ask questions to make the audience carry on watching. On our camera angles we will need to create hierachy as on thrillers there's usually good guys and bad guys. Sound is executed extremely well in this opening, the sound is really tense which pairs up with the tense opening scene. We will need sound in our opening if we want a tense atmosphere.
